RARW ARMS & MILITARIA: CZERNY'S: June 25-26th
Czerny's conducts its Summer Auction on July 25–26. The sale brings together an impressive selection of edged weapons, antique firearms, armour and military relics with some rare and outstanding highlights.
Among the museum quality lots in the edged weapons section is a silver-mounted shashka associated with the period of Nicholas II, alongside a rare and unusual 19th-century Turkish kandshar dagger, (ictured) with a cylindrical nephrite grip enriched with gold-inlaid decoration and colorful champlevé enamels. Collectors of Caucasian weapons will note a rare qama of exceptional length dating to the late nineteenth century, while Ottoman arms are represented by a large Turkish jambiya with damascus blade and gold koftgari decoration, accompanied by a second silver-mounted example. Also noteworthy is a finely decorated Afghan Khyber knife with an unusually long blade and gilded floral engravings.
The firearms section offers several exceptional pieces. Leading the category is a beautiful 17th-century wheel-lock tschinke from Teschen, stocked in pearwood and lavishly inlaid with bone and mother-of-pearl depicting both real and fantastical creatures. Considered one of the finest examples to appear at auction in recent years, it is joined by a desirable third-model Winchester Model 1866 “Yellow Boy” carbine, an extremely rare Model 1793 “Carabine de Versailles” cavalry carbine, and a fine pair of Tuscan snaphaunce-lock holster pistols.
Military collectors will find a strong offering of Napoleonic-era headgear, including a French dragoon helmet of the First Empire and a very rare Piedmontese infantry officer’s helmet dating to circa 1814.
Additional highlights include a keris from Surakarta incorporating an ancient pamor blade, a rare Eastern European senior cavalry officer’s armour bearing an effigy of the Virgin Mary and dating to circa 1630–1650, a fine Savoyard-type close helmet, and an exceptionally attractive Spanish shield of circa 1600 painted with the arms of the Echavarria-Bengoa family of Gaviria.
